The northern area along White Lake, the deepest lake in Sullivan County, is called Kauneonga Lake. Guests can enjoy fishing, swimming, kayaking and taking in the dramatic sunsets that color the sky directly across the lake. The water is about chest-deep at the end of the dock, but then gets much deeper, and there is a float to swim out to. A kayak and water toys are included in the rental, but guests are also invited to bring their own boats to dock at the house. The owner's motorboat is docked at the house, though we kindly ask that this remain off limits to guests.
The heart of the Main House is a bright and appealing open plan space that includes the modern kitchen, with its miles of granite countertops, two sinks, two dishwashers, and a breakfast bar; a lounge with comfy sectional that faces an elegant stone fireplace; and another seating area around the media center, for relaxed cable TV and movie viewing. Light streams through the three sets of sliding doors that open onto the extensive wraparound deck and offer lake views.
Off this Great Room, a corridor leads to the 11 bedrooms, five of which open onto the deck, and seven of which are either en suite or with a jack-and-jill bathroom. At the far end of the house, upstairs, are two bedrooms, one bath, that could suit a family quite well, with one bedroom featuring two twins and a day bed, the other a queen, and the shared bath has a tub/shower.
There is a butler's pantry that's really another room, off the other side of the Great Room, which includes another refrigerator, sink and storage. This is part of a breezeway that connects the Main House with The Cottage, via a door in that room that is locked when not in use.
The kitchen has a center island with breakfast bar and the usual appliances. A separate dining room faces the front of the building, which enjoys wonderful sunlight at breakfast time. The three bedrooms are upstairs, with a king bed in the master, and a private bathroom with a shower. The other two bedrooms (two twins and a queen), share a bathroom that has a tub/shower.
The hamlet of Kauneonga Lake, a three minute walk from the house, buzzes most of the year with restaurants, a bakery and a couple of shops. A short drive will take you to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, which is the jewel in the crown of Sullivan County, boasting an impressive concert line-up in summer, and several fairs and festivals during the autumn.
